If games were won
on chances alone then the Rams would surely be on top of the
league and most likely champions by now!
This was yet another example of
poor finishing that has cost the Rams dear as they created
several chances to have come away from Salford with at least a
point.
As early as the third minute
Dean Thurston broke free only to see his final shot go horribly
wrong.
Two minutes later and Salford,
with their first attack on the Rams goal, took the lead after
Lathan Forrester ran unchallenged into the Rams area and he
unleashed a terrific shot that looped over Ogden and into the
net.
In the ninth minute Graham
Vaughan found himself in a tremendous position to cross the ball
to unmarked team mates but he somehow managed to make a complete
mess of it and the chance went.
Further chances by the Rams all
went begging with Thurston and Sensale the main culprits.
On 30 minutes Thurston once again broke forwards only to see his
shot easily saved by ex-Rams keeper Martin Campbell and ten
minutes later Andy Sensale beat the left-back and after
advancing forwards his shot was also easy for the home keeper.
The second half was pretty much
the same with Salford content to hit the Rams on the break.
Ramsbottom once again created
and failed to take any of their chances and Sensale had a
glorious chance in the 62nd minute to pull the ball back to his
team mates but he blazed high and wide.
Salford created one chance in
the 85th minute but the shot was wasted.
The Rams thought they had
equalised a minute later when substitute Lee McNally struck a
tremendous shot that deceived Campbell but unfortunately for the
Rams the ball bounced down from the underside of the bar and it
was cleared out to safety.
So, another defeat due to
wastefulness, but that has been the story of the Rams season.
They have dropped over 30 points this season when in commanding
positions and its a lack of proficiency that has perhaps been
the main cause for their lowly league position and what is now
looking like being their lowest ever points tally since they
entered the NWCFL back in 1995.
As for Salford City - today may
have been an off day for them as they didn't look anywhere near
a side that is currently second in the VodKat League and chasing
a place in the UniBond North.
